This isn’t exactly panoramic photography but i find it very interesting nonetheless. I don’t know the name of the concept these photos abide to so i’ll call it clone photography because there are various clones of the person in the photo. I made a photo with a friend of mine that i would like to share. Click the image for fullsize.

As you can see, there are various copies of ‘me’ and various copies of my friend. So..how did i make this photo? This is a 2 step process: take the photos, then mix the photos on an image editing software.

• Step 1 – Taking the photos

You should ask help from a friend or use a remote trigger because the photos must be taken without moving the camera. Slight movements are tolerated depending on the quality of the blending that step 2 will execute.
The person(s) on the photo then changes position between each photo without overlaping the previous positions unless you’re into more complicated photo editing. The photo above was made with 34 photos, but not all made it to the final image. I made a gallery with the photos i took to make the photo above. Click here to open it.

• Step 2 – Mixing the photos

You’ll start with one photo which i suggest to be the one most clear (of obstacles, other people, etc). The other photos will be pasted into this main photo. Cut everything around the person, but leave some space so you can apply a layer mask to it. This layer mask is important because it seamlessly (hopefully) blends the person in the photo and you won’t notice any difference. The blending is done with layer masks and the gradient tool.

I won’t go into much detail about this because it requires some Photoshop skills. I found a tutorial about this so you can read it if you want. I also made a video showing the blending process for one photo. I’m going to blend IMG_7024.JPG and IMG_7025.JPG together.

So, what do you guys think? I’d love to read some suggestions about other photo techniques.

My Cisco insider source told me..ok i’m lying..Cisco sent me an email with some news about Netspace Challenge. The new game seems very interesting but no news about some decent prizes.

Apply your networking skills to real world problems during the next phase of the NetSpace Challenge. In mid-October we are launching a new game that goes beyond multiple choice questions to explore how networking can be used to solve a multitude of problems and enhance the lives of those who are connected.

 

NetSpace Challenge Apply will have four increasingly difficult levels in each category of play. Whether you are competing in IT Essentials, CCNA 1-2, CCNA 3-4, or Advanced Networking, you will experience the Challenge at a whole new level. 

 

The scenario-based questions will challenge you to provide real-world solutions using your technical knowledge, information provided in the “problem,” and tools such as Packet Tracer or Virtual Laptop/Desktop. We have also planned some surprises to keep the game fun and interesting.

 

In order to participate in the Challenge, you must have a registered profile at www.academynetspace.com. If you haven’t registered a profile, please do so before 10 October 2007 so that you will be eligible to play when this exciting game launches.

 

We will announce the launch of Level 1 in mid-October. The next levels will launch every two weeks until all four levels are open for play.

Valve’s Portal is finally around the corner, slated for a October 10-ish release date, and Joel Esler is just in time to warm up our minds for the big event with a little flash puzzle game called Manifold. Click the image for fullsize.

Your character has some sort of gun that shoots gravity anomalies enabling you to overcome obstacles. It has the same logic as Portal, so if you can’t make it to end, you’re too weak for mighty Portal! I made a gameplay video so you can see for yourself before playing the game.

I discovered another wonderful site about panoramic photography. Just like Panoramio, users upload their own photos and add them on a map. Click the image for fullsize.

The site is called PanoramicEarth.com and is dedicated to 360º panoramas. The site is integrates Google Map is a very advanced fashion. Click the image for fullsize.

The presence of photos is indicated through little pins on their exact location where the photo was taken and you can pan the 360º panorama and check the direction where you’re looking at.

At the moment, there are more little more than 1000 panoramas, but the site is promising! Unfortunately i haven’t done any 360º panorama so i didn’t add any photo, (except one, from Leysin) but i already signed up!

O Ricardo Calejo aponta para um artigo no Sapo Sol que anuncia que a Microsoft assinou um acordo (comunicado oficial) com a Empresa de Gestão Partilhada de Recursos da Administração Pública (GeRAP) para a criação de um centro de desenvolvimento de soluções para a Administração Pública. A GeRAP é uma entidade pública de cariz empresarial, que irá prestar serviços partilhados de suporte à Administração Pública. A Microsoft será responsável pela parte técnica do centro e a GeRAP pela parte gestora.

No âmbito do acordo fica previsto que a Microsoft vai ficar responsável por integrar neste centro as componentes desenvolvidas no Microsoft Language Development Centre de Lisboa e por disponibilizar os conteúdos técnicos necessários ao Centro de Inovação, nomeadamente através da criação de uma biblioteca com literatura sobre a plataforma .NET, assim como pela organização de workshops e acções de formação com vista à utilização e à divulgação das tecnologias emergentes necessárias às actividades do centro.

Por parte da GeRAP o acordo prevê que a empresa pública colabore com a Microsoft em áreas como a dinamização do desenvolvimento do Centro, definição dos objectivos de formação tecnológica e do plano de formação a elaborar para os elementos do Centro e promoção e divulgação do mesmo e das suas actividades em sessões públicas de apresentações dos projectos.

Na cerimónia estiverem presentes várias personalidades, incluindo Pierre Liautaud, Vice-Presidente da Microsoft para a Europa Ocidental, o qual admitiu que este acordo representa um exemplo nas relações entre empresas e organismos do Estado.

Este protocolo é mais uma prova da relação de parceria estreita que se pode estabelecer entre as empresas privadas e organismos públicos em prol do desenvolvimento e crescimento económico dos países.

A week ago or so i discovered a wonderful site called Panoramio, recently acquired by Google, that enables users to share their (non-personal) photos from places they’ve been and add them on a map.

For example, let’s take a look at my hometown, Aveiro. Click the image for a bigger resolution.

On the left, various user submitted photos from the region are displayed, and on the right their location is pinpointed by frames and thumbnails. The photos are automatically updated wherever you zoom in or out, or pan the map.

Since Google acquired Panoramio, the photos are accessible from Google Earth. Click for a bigger resolution.

Every one of those blue dots are Panoramio photos, if you click them, the respective photo is displayed.

To this date, there are more than 1.7 million photos already, with 500 000 more every month.

In an individual approach, you can map photos from a single user and download his Google Earth KML file. I’ve already submitted many of my panoramic photos, so take a look at my profile, check them on a map, or download the KML file.

Unfortunately, i couldn’t find any similar service for Microsoft’s Virtual Earth (hint hint Microsoft!).

Irei demonstrar o processo para criar fotos panorâmicas, neste caso, iremos obter a foto acima, que é uma foto composta por 4 fotos individuais e processada por um programa especializado em unir fotos.

No processo, existem 3 passos para obter o resultado final: tirar as fotos, unir as fotos, ajustamento do resultado final.

• Passo 1 – Tirar as fotos

As fotos são tiradas a partir da mesma posição e em sequência, rodando o corpo para tirar cada foto, sendo o corpo o eixo de rotação. Cada foto terá que ter uma área comum com a foto anterior para que o programa possa reconhecer os pontos de controlo e assim unir cada foto. A imagem abaixo mostra as fotos individuais utilizadas e ilustra as áreas comuns. Clique para aumentar.

Como pode ver, as fotos apresentam grandes áreas comuns, o que deverá facilitar o trabalho para o programa, no entanto, alguns programas têm dificuldade com grandes áreas comuns. O recomendado é 20% de área em cada lado das fotos.

• Passo 2 – Unir as fotos

Este é o passo automático do processo. Utilizando um programa especializado em unir fotos, basta adicionar as fotos e executar o processo. Poderá ainda alterar certas opções, como o tipo de projecção. Para este guia, utilizarei a funcionalidade Photomerge do Photoshop CS3. Irei falar de outros programas outro dia. Clique para aumentar.

Como pode ver, poderá escolher qual o tipo de projecção para a foto panorâmica.

• Passo 3 – Ajustamento final

Este passo é opcional e geralmente desnecessário pois a maior parte dos programas fazem ajustamentos automáticos, no entanto o conhecimento deste passo poderá fazer a diferença. A imagem obtida pelo Photomerge é a seguinte:

Como pode ver, o resultado é impressionante, no entanto, existem áreas em branco que correspondem a áreas que não foram fotografadas, sendo necessário algum ajustamento.

Começemos pelo céu. Se cortarmos a zona branca, iremos cortar a torre do palácio e a foto ficará com mau enquadramento, o que não é recomendável. Analisando a imagem, o céu é algo muito liso e pouco detalhado portanto fácil de reproduzir. Este passo utiliza a ferramento Clone Tool, do Photoshop, que possui o seguinte ícone: .

O que iremos fazer é clonar áreas vizinhas da zona branca recriando o céu. Poderá observar a acção pelo seguinte vídeo:

Repare que apliquei um filtro Gaussian Blur à zona clonada para suavizar as pinceladas.

I’ve added more panoramas to my panorama gallery! I made these panoramas on several of my recent trips, which i may post about in the future. I’ll feature some in this post but of course i recommend you to browse the whole gallery. Don’t worry about my bandwidth, i have lots of it, so don’t mind with large images! =P

I’ll start with a traditional Portuguese building with its beautiful painted tiles. This is the Aveiro train station:

Why is this a panorama, you may ask? There are two reasons: it is a composite of various photos and they were taken a few meters from the building. To shoot the whole building, you’d have to be considerably farther away with some zoom. I just featured because of the tiles (more tourists for Aveiro please!).

Another train station! This one is from Porto. Notice the architectural difference, and they’re just 60km away each other.

This is the famous Ribeira do Porto, the traditional riverside of Porto. This is the place on the postcards you buy from Porto.

Next, an impressive cityscape view of the city, from the Clerigos Tower (Torre dos Clérigos).

The reason this panorama has a large black area is that this panorama was made from several smaller panoramas. I made panoramas from various directions, but the stitching software detected that it could stitch them all and i was unaware of that at the time. The software is smarter than me i’m afraid.

Let’s move to the country side! I visited Palácio do Bussaco, an historic palace. It’s a nice place to visit, the architecture is beautiful, the gardens are full of colour and harmony and it is surrounded by a gorgeous woods. You can see the palace on the center of the panorama.

The palace sits near the hill, which i was told that measures 3km above sea level. From the top, the view is breathtaking.

I also visited Serra da Freita, a hill that measures a couple of kilometers high. The landscape is desertic but still beautiful.

I’d like to show a little engineering miracle. This wall is made of stones. Just stones. There is no concrete or anything else holding the wall together, except gravity. The wall is in perfect shape despite the inclination and the hill harsh weather.

I hope you enjoyed my panoramas. There are darker places in the sky because of colour distortion from cheap camera, and i would love that someone could offer me a decent camera, are you feeling generous? =D

A fellow MSP Ricardo Calejo asked me to do a wallpaper so did. I used the assets from the MSP assets site and a stock image for the guy with the open arms.
